Horror, Ghosts & Folklore — A 5-Day Intensive with Katy Schutte
What lingers in the dark? Why do ghost stories endure? What do fairy tales really tell us?
In this atmospheric summer intensive, Katy Schutte invites you to explore horror and folklore as doorways into deeper theatrical storytelling. Inspired by her acclaimed Folklore training, this week focuses on archetypes, tension, symbolism and the power of the unknown.
Rather than pushing a fast-paced plot, we’ll slow down and build mood, metaphor and meaning. We’ll explore local legends, hauntings and eerie tales through a contemporary (and feminist) lens — asking what these stories reveal about power, fear, belonging and transformation.
You don’t need to know anything about horror or folklore to join. This isn’t about jump scares or gore — it’s about atmosphere, emotional truth and ensemble sensitivity. Everything you need will be discovered in the room.
We’ll work on:
- Sustaining tension
- Playing with silence and space
- Archetypal character work
- Physicality and ensemble presence
- Long-form narrative cohesion
Designed for intermediate and above improvisers comfortable with open scenes and long-form basics.
The week culminates with an opportunity to share work at the ‘Improv Lab’ on Saturday afternoon at the Bristol Improv Theatre.
Katy’s friendly dog Pooka will also be in residence — a reassuring presence for any nervous souls. 🐾
